Most of the energy on Earth can be traced back to the Sun. The Sun is more than 140 million kilometers from Earth, yet produces enough light and heat to light up the Earth and keep us warm.
Solar electricity, or solar energy, can be produced when light energy from the Sun is transformed into electrical energy. This is done through special devices called photovoltaic cells. The cells are connected together in large groups to form solar panels.
Solar panels can be attached to the roof of buildings and provide homes with electricity. Large collections of solar panels are often placed in open areas that get lots of sunlight. The electricity they produce is used to power towns and cities.

Renewable Energy 101
Question: What's the most abundant energy source in our solar system? Here's a hint, it's 1 million times bigger than the Earth and without it our planet would be a dark, cold rock floating in space. You guessed it: the incredible, brilliant sun.
The Earth gets more energy from this ball of fire and gas in one day than the whole world's population uses in an entire year. Every living thing depends on the sun for its existence, from tiny microbes deep in the ocean to plants, animals and people.
Humans have been tinkering with solar energy since the dawn of time. Ancient civilizations used glass and mirrors to light fires, but it wasn't until the 1950s that technology was developed to convert the sun's energy into electricity using photovoltaic cells. Today, solar technology is more efficient and less expensive and is used all around the globe to create electricity, heat water, cook food and even power vehicles.
So how do solar panels usually work? When the sun hits a solar panel, material inside (usually silicon) absorbs the energy. This causes the electrons and its atoms to get very excited and start dancing around. The atoms then get hot and shed the electrons, which travel out of the panel through copper wiring and — ZAP! — we have electricity! A control device called an inverter changes this electricity from direct current to the alternating current we use. The electricity then passes from breaker boxes to outlets and into electrical items like a computer and lights. Whatever you don't use can go back into the grid to be used by someone else.
So there you have it — the amazing power of the sun. Some people see a future where most of our energy can come from this pollution-free and renewable resource, and that's a sunny outlook that will make the whole world smile!

Most of the energy on Earth can be traced back to the Sun. The Sun is more than 140 million kilometers from Earth, yet produces enough light and heat to light up the Earth and keep us warm.
Solar electricity, or solar energy, can be produced when light energy from the Sun is transformed into electrical energy. This is done through special devices called photovoltaic cells. The cells are connected together in large groups to form solar panels.
Solar panels can be attached to the roof of buildings and provide homes with electricity. Large collections of solar panels are often placed in open areas that get lots of sunlight. The electricity they produce is used to power towns and cities.
Solar electricity has many advantages. It is a renewable energy source that will never run out. It also produces no pollution, which is better for the environment. The disadvantages of solar electricity are that the panels require a large amount of space and they can be expensive to install. Solar panels may also produce less electricity on cloudy/overcast days.
Natural Resources
Materials or substances in nature that are used by people are called natural resources. We use many different kinds of natural resources for a range of different purposes.
Rocks, soil, metals and wood are natural resources used to build houses and buildings. Plants and animals are natural resources that are often farmed to produce the food we eat and the clothes we wear. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are also natural resources.
Some natural resources, like fossil fuels, take millions of years to form. We use these resources far quicker than they can be replaced. They are called non-renewable resources.
Other natural resources, like the energy in sunlight, wind and moving water, cannot be used up. They are called renewable resources.
Solar-powered Homes
A solar-powered home is a home that meets all or part of its electricity needs using solar power.
Solar panels are attached to the roof and positioned in a way to absorb as much sunlight as possible. Photovoltaic cells convert the sunlight into electrical energy. The electrical energy is sent to an inverter which makes the electricity available to use.
The electricity can be used to power electrical appliances within the home or stored in batteries to use later. If the solar panels produce more electricity than needed, the electricity can be sent to the electric grid for others to use.

History has revealed that advances in renewable energy often follow crises: In the 1970s, oil embargos caused the cost of oil to quadruple, spurring efforts to reduce American dependence on fossil fuels and find alternative sources of power, including solar energy or wind power. The 2008-09 global financial crisis led to several governments linking part of their economic stimulus to investment in clean energy. The pandemic of 2019/2020 led to an unprecedented energy shock, and following in 2021, investment in renewable energy reached the highest levels since the Great Recession.
But renewable energy is sustainable, now we explore which is better between solar energy and wind energy.
The earliest recorded evidence of wind energy being used dates to around 6000 to 5000 B.C., when the sail was invented to catch the wind and propel boats. Over the years, developments in wind power allowed humans to grind grain, pump water, and eventually, around the late 1800s, generate electricity from kinetic energy. One could argue that solar energy has been used since 700 B.C., when mirrors were used to concentrate solar energy to make fire. But solar cells were not used to generate energy until 1839, when Edmond Becquerel, a young physicist working in France, first observed and noted the photovoltaic effect. It took more than a century to produce a practical solar panel after Becquerel’s discovery. Solar energy remained in the research-and-development phase for several decades. Over the next few decades, the share of U.S. electricity generation from wind grew from less than 1% in 1990 to about 8.4% in 2020. Solar energy’s share of total U.S. utility-scale electricity generation grew from 0.1% in 1990 to around 2.5% in 2020.
Solar energy can make a big difference in the prevention of global warming.
